The US’ trade deficit stems from its extremely low natio

nal savings rate and has to be compensated by other countries’ national savings, which in tu

rn adds to the trade deficit. On the other hand, China’s efficiency in the manufacturing industry makes it a lar

ge exporter of manufactured goods to the US and helps it sustain its high savings rate.

A high growth rate means higher trade deficit for US

Given that the US economy is driven by domestic demand, consumpt

ion in particular, instead of exports, a high rate of ec

onomic growth will widen the trade deficit, as it would have to import more products than it exports. In such a sit

uation, the implementation of large-scale infrastructure construction projects would further increase the trade deficit.

said it would be adding Huawei and its 70 affiliates to an Entity List, which will ban the compan

Gao Feng, spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, said at a briefing that the con

“China strongly opposes other countries imposing unilateral sanctions on Chinese entities,” Gao said.

He called on the US to stop its wrongful behavior and make more efforts to create conditions for normal international trade cooperation.

Huawei has been increasing its 5G commercial contracts worldwide, with more countries giving the com

He urged the US to “appropriately handle the Taiwan question to avoid serious da

Experts said the bill will further damage Sino-US relations, and the confr

Yuan Zheng, director of US foreign relations research at the Institute of American Studies under the Chinese Academy of

political support to Taiwan are meant to help Taiwan separatists and pressure Beijing.

In the ninth round of trade consultations, negotiators discussed tec

The trouble that Boeing has encountered, albeit because of its own irresponsible practices tow

ard the safety of passengers and aircraft, has helped its main competitor Airbus to grab so

me orders to supply new aircraft. Airbus’ gain and Boeing’s loss in stock market since the Ethiopian Airlines plane crash on March 10 re

flects a duopoly market’s sentiment, and demand and supply relations. Yet it would be too farfetched, as well as in

humane, to say Boeing’s loss would benefit China, which lost eight of its nationals in the Ethiopian Airlines crash.

Nonetheless, the plane crash could help end the world’s obsession with

aerospace giants. Which in turn could indirectly benefit China-but decades later when its aer

ospace industry becomes mature enough to compete with Airbus and Boeing and grab a slice of the market fro

m them. Also, China should learn a lesson from the 737 Max crash to focus more on passengers’ safety.

What China should do now is to cultivate more talents who specialize in aviation and aircraft manufacturing, by deepe

ning its education reform. The road ahead is as bumpy as, maybe bumpier than, that for Boeing and Airbus given t

e US-led West’s increasing wariness with China and attempts to contain its peaceful rise.
